Bringing together Dr Amreesh Phokeer, Hanjali Permalloo-Le Roux, Vidia Mooneegan and Marc Israel, the panel described how organisations in Mauritius currently deploy new technologies and assessed what these deployments mean for data protection, national security and social welfare. Mauritius and the wider region stand to gain a great deal from adopting these tools more widely, and the discussion examined how to secure those gains while managing associated risks.

Key takeaways include:

Organisations should define their end-goals before adopting new technologies

  • Many tools cost too much and return too little to suit the Mauritian context. Private and public sector actors should therefore focus on integrating tools that fit the local context and the specific problem they need to solve.

  • Mauritius should consider developing its own local models, which would reduce its dependence on single vendors and give it greater control over data protection.

  • While new technologies promise to boost capital growth, it may do so at the expense of job creation and new Graduates will need to be AI literate within their respective disciplines

  • Government and the private sector should address the social and fiscal consequences of this disruption now, so that they can put strategies in place to protect jobs and tax revenues.
